The questions you’re actually thinking.
Answered honestly.
Grouped by when they usually come up, including the one everyone asks: regular vs direct mutual fund plans. The uncomfortable ones are at the end, and we didn’t soften them.
Before you start
Aren’t all mutual fund distributors biased by commission? Why should I trust you?
Yes, the bias exists structurally, and we won’t pretend otherwise. Every distributor earns more from equity funds than from liquid funds. The real question is whether that conflict is disclosed and managed.
We explain exactly how we’re paid, and we’ll tell you what we earn on any fund we recommend. We recommend liquid, arbitrage and index funds regularly, even though they earn us a fraction of what equity funds pay. The proof is in what our clients hold, not in what we say. See how we earn
Regular vs direct mutual fund plans: why not just buy direct on Groww, Kuvera or Coin?
Direct plans are cheaper by roughly 0.5–1% a year — that’s the distributor’s commission. If you know what to buy, when to rebalance, how to plan exits around goals and tax, and you’ll hold your nerve through a 30–40% fall, buy direct. Genuinely.
What that 1% pays for with us: people who know your family’s full picture, stop the panicked redemption in a crash, plan your withdrawals when retirement comes, and tell you when you’re about to make an expensive mistake. For some people that isn’t worth it. For the families who stay with us, it is.
How are you different from a fee-only SEBI-registered investment adviser?
A fee-only adviser charges you directly and earns nothing from fund houses, but can’t distribute funds. Their conflict is that their income depends on you continuing to pay; ours is that our income depends on what you invest in. Both are real, and both can be managed.
Fee-only advisers suit people who want advice across stocks, PMS and alternative funds. We suit families who want a long-term mutual fund relationship, where our income — which only continues while you stay — depends on keeping you well served. We won’t claim ours is automatically better.
Who do you work with? Is there a minimum investment?
Mostly pre-retirees and retirees, NRIs, business owners, and families tidying up scattered investments. There’s no hard minimum, but because everything we do is personal, the relationship works best with a meaningful sum — typically ₹10 lakhs and above. If you’re earlier on, we’ll point you to honest resources rather than take on a relationship that doesn’t serve you. See who we work with
How do I get started?
Send us a message. There’s no form and no brochure. We’ll talk about your situation, and if it’s a good fit for both of us, we’ll take it from there. Get in touch
How we work
How do you decide what to recommend?
Every relationship starts with your life stage, how you earn, what you already own, your goals and when you’ll need money. Only once that picture is clear does any fund come up. Every recommendation is written down with the reason, tied to the need you told us — so you can hold us to it.
How often will I hear from you?
We review every portfolio at least twice a year, and more often if markets move sharply or your life changes. You can reach us any time in between. There’s no ticket queue.
Can I track my investments myself?
Yes. You get a portfolio dashboard where you can see your holdings, track goals, run redemption simulations and download reports whenever you like.
Is everything online? Do we need to meet?
Everything — onboarding, KYC, choosing funds, investing and reviews — can happen online. If you’re in Chennai and would like to meet, we’ll come to your home, by appointment. NRI clients never need to be in India.
The uncomfortable questions
Regular plans cost more. Am I paying extra just to have you?
Yes. Regular plans cost 0.5–1% a year more than direct plans, and that difference is our commission. Over 20 years, 1% compounding adds up — if all a distributor does is collect it. If it buys real, long-term guidance, including the call that stops you selling at the worst moment, the maths turns the other way. We think it does for our clients, or they wouldn’t stay.
Do fund houses give you incentives beyond commission?
Fund houses run distributor programmes: payouts for hitting volume targets, “training conferences” and similar. They’re legal. We don’t take part in scheme-specific volume programmes, because they’d push us to sell a particular fund house. We use whichever fund suits you.
Can you guarantee returns?
No. Nobody can, and anyone who suggests otherwise is misrepresenting how mutual funds work. What we can do is match the right kind of fund to your goal and timeline, stay calm through market cycles, and make sure the risk you’re actually taking matches the risk you’re comfortable with.
What if Ram or someone on the team is unavailable?
Ram, Maalathi and Swetha work as one team, and every client relationship is documented in detail. Nothing lives in one person’s head. If one of us is away, another can pick up your query without starting from scratch.
You say no client has ever left. What if I’m unhappy?
Tell us. The relationships that last are the ones where problems got raised and fixed, not the ones where there were never any problems. We’d rather fix what’s wrong than lose you — and we’d rather lose you than have you stay unhappy.
Still have a question?
